The ATO is moving with the times! They have announced that they are moving towards a “digital by default” approach to correspondence.
Part of this is joining the MyGov website. MyGov is a fast and simple way to access government online services, not just the ATO, but also Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support.
It has made many things so much simpler:
- You can update your address on the MyGov website across all Australian Government Agencies.
- No longer do you need to find a Medicare office to claim rebates, you can take a photo of your invoice and upload it on-line.
- If you need to claim Family Tax Benefit or register for Child Care Rebate, or even update your income estimates – again, all able to be done on-line.
Some accountants have been protesting against this change as once set up the ATO sends a lot of your correspondence right there – your Notice of Assessment, Quarterly Activity Statements, Division 293 Notices for those with incomes over $300,000, Excess Superannuation Contributions Tax notices.
We think it’s great! Our value to you is in the advice that we provide, not in forwarding on correspondence. We are still able to download a copy, and you have your own copy in a single place if you ever want to refer back to it.
You receive an email and/or text when you have new correspondence there, and we are always on hand if there is correspondence that doesn’t make sense or you are not sure of. With the recent changes to Australia Post and the standard delivery times of 3-6 business days for a letter, you will get your correspondence in a timely manner as well.
If you haven’t already, head on to MyGov. Set up your account now and link the services that you use and start enjoying the benefits.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact your advisor.
